How to Become an SMWOA Wrestling Official

 

The Southern Minnesota Wrestling Officials Association (SMWOA) is actively recruiting new members for the upcoming season. The path to becoming an official involves a multi-step process that requires timely completion. This guide outlines the required steps to become a registered wrestling official.

 

Step 1: Register with the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL)

 

All officials must be registered with the MSHSL to be eligible to officiate. Please be advised that the MSHSL registration is a detailed process that may take several days to finalize.

• Registration Deadline: Registration for each sport closes approximately one week prior to the season start date.

Please follow the instructions below based on your status as an official.

For Brand-New Officials (First-Time MSHSL Registration)

If you have never officiated an MSHSL sport, you must create a new account.

​

1. Navigate to the MSHSL Arbiter Registration portal

2. Follow the on screen steps to create a new account.  If you already have an Arbiter Account, simply login.

3. Once logged in, either with a new account or an existing one, select the Eligibility button from your Dashboard, then click Registration then click on the corresponding  School Year.

4. Scroll toward the bottom of the page and select Wrestling.

5. Proceed through the subsequent steps to complete your registration as a wrestling official with the MSHSL.

For Existing MSHSL Officials (Adding Wrestling to your Profile)

If you are already registered with the MSHSL for other sports, you must add wrestling to your officiating profile.

​

1. Log in to your MSHSL Arbiter account.

2. select the Eligibility button from your Dashboard, then click Registration then click on the corresponding  School Year.

3. Scroll toward the bottom of the page and select Wrestling.

4. Proceed through the subsequent steps to complete your registration as a wrestling official with the MSHSL.

Note: MSHSL registration must be renewed annually to remain eligible to officiate wrestling matches.

Step 2: Attend the SMWOA Pre-Season Meeting

 

The SMWOA pre-season meeting for wrestling officials typically occurs in early November. At this meeting, you will be assigned a mentor and receive essential training on scheduling software (ArbiterSports), officiating fundamentals, and association procedures.
